Week 7

Although she still resembles a tiny alien, your baby's facial features are starting to form. Arms, legs, hands, and feet are taking shape, although they don't yet have fingers and toes. The brain is growing more complex; if you looked through a microscope, it would be clearly visible through the transparent skull. The embryo has started to move in small jerks, although you won't feel these until the fourth month.
Those are much better pictures than the other ones I was using. I will be sticking with the ones from this website now.
Anyway, things are going well. I was supposed to go in and sub at an elementary school here in Rochester today, but when I showed up, they were like "Oh, a teacher came in that wasn't supposed to be here, so we shifted around a bunch of our subs and we're not going to need you today afterall." I was relieved, becacuse I came home and slept for another two hours. I've been lounging on the couch most of the day, except to go run a couple of errands, and to unload the dishwasher - both of which just about drained me of any energy I had left!
A woman I know from my church called me the other day. She has a job opening for a case manager at the homeless shelter she works at, and wanted to know if I was interested. It's a huge debate, because of how much I love teaching - but it's only part time, and I would be able to bring the baby to work with me if I wanted to... I don't know....
I'm getting nervous about my PRAXIS II tests coming up a week from Saturday. I've got lots of studying to do, so if my brain will handle it, I've got to get to studying some this afternoon. I just ordered a new social studies book that I'm hoping will help a lot with some of the social studies stuff - especially since I'm taking a test in Social Studies alone. God forbid I try to take it and get all but one question wrong or something.
A math teacher job opened up in Johns school for the next school year. I put in my application for it. Actually, my application for it is sitting in my mailbox right now. I didn't want John to bring it in, because I didn't think that would be very professional, and I didn't want the principal to think that I was getting him to do it because I thought it would buy me an in or something. I don't know if I'd be good at teaching math, but I'm interested in a lot of subjects now that I've started subbing again!
Alright, all this talk about teaching is making me want to go study for my tests.

Baby stuff, knitting stuff, other stuff

Well, I finally discovered that the reason my feet and ankles hurt so much is because I'm already starting to get the swelling in them! I made the mistake of telling John that foot massages are bad because they can trigger contractions. Unfortunately, I forgot to mention that they're bad after the 5th month! Now he won't even go near my feet. But I did find a woman that is willing to give me her home foot spa thing, so that will be nice. I've actually got to leave soon to pick that up.

This is what Roo looks like right now. Not much of anything, but still kind of cool. I'll be trying to post pictures every week to show the natural progression of things. It's amazing to think that this is all going on inside me, and the only thing I feel is some discomfort if I stand for too long, some aversion to some foods, and extreme fatigue. I tell John that the tiredness is because "buildin' a baby is hard work!"

I'm working on knitting on two prayer shawls right now. One of them only needs a few more rows done on it, so I'm hoping to get those done today and get it in the mail tomorrow. The other one I just picked up at the post office on Saturday, so I will get working on that one soon. I also need to get to work on the second sock for my mom. I got the first one done the other day, and she tried it on. Fortunately, it fit her very well, even over another sock, so I'm glad my guesswork was right! I cast on the second sock, but that's about as far as I've gotten. I'd like to get it done quickly, but I'm going to be focused on getting all my studying done for my tests.

I've got 2.5 subjects still to cover and two weeks to get it done in. I am NOT so happy about that. I think I will be studying like crazy the next few weeks, and I'm kind of praying not to get called in to sub tomorrow so that I'll have two full days to work this week. I don't want to say no to any sub jobs, because we can always use the money...

Anyway, off to pick up my cool new foot massager spa thing!

Nothing really to report

I don't have any real news, but I figured after two quiz postings, I should do a real update.

So... I'm still leaving my job on the 12th of January, and I CANNOT wait. I'm so excited to get into something new and different. I'm really hoping to sort out if I want to be in the school environment, or if I want to go back to nursing school, because they both totally have their perks. Of course, I could always go to nursing school, then become a school nurse, that would be fun. But I don't know. It would be really nice to work on a similar schedule to John, because then when we get around to having kids, we'll have the times the kids are with a sitter, and then the times that we're both home. Unless one of us goes out to do something like John at rehearsals, or me at... something. So for the time being, I'm set up to substitute in Laconia. But I've got to find something more permanent than that. I keep perusing the help wanted ads on schoolspring.com but have yet to come across something I can do that's a decent drive from here. I'm going to pick up the Sunday paper today and see what's in that. I've applied for a guidance counselor position in Farmington, and I've also applied for a social worker position at Exeter Hospital, but never heard back on either one. It's hard, because I'm still with the state for another 5 or 6 weeks, and most places are looking for someone who can start immediately.

Other than that, I really don't have much to write about. So I'm going to go see if I have time to finish FFIX before mass or if I should wait until this afternoon

Talk about a major flashback...

So this morning I woke up early, which I didn't really want to do, but the cats were driving me nuts. So I got up, did a couple of things on the computer and then went to the TV to begin channel surfing. Now, what happened next, only one person on my friends list will have a TRUE appreciation for what I saw, but there she was, as big as my TV screen could make her: Raquel. She was back and she was on channel 6. I had found my true love of high school Spanish right in my own living room. Destinos was on TV. I was so excited about it, I sat through the next 45 minutes (an episode and a half) of it, just because I could! I was so excited! Sarah M., I KNOW you would be excited about that too. All I could do when I was watching it was think about my high school Spanish teacher and how badly we all used to rag on him about all kinds of stuff (namely his studder - "Okay, translate this: Yo.... yo.....yo..... yo yo yo...." and Aaron going "Okay, I... I.... I.... I I I...." - and the fact that he thougt he was the next Fransisco Franco).

What make it even WEIRDER though is that I had a dream about him JUST LAST NIGHT! Of course, in my dream he had shaved his beard and was dressed in drag doing seminars all over the country about the importance of being bilingual when working with children. I told him (because I didn't really recognize him) that he reminded me of my high school Spanish teacher, and he said "Did you go to ConVal?" and I was like "Yeah" and he was like "well, that's because I WAS your high school Spanish teacher!" He went on to tell me that he never moved to Florida because he got to involved with doing these trainings. Okay, tell me that wasn't a nightmare. It was crazy... so first my dream of seƱor Morey up there talking away in Spanish and then finding Destinos on tv.

Anyway... On the house front: We made an offer on that house in New Durham that we really liked. Unfortunately, the builder refused to come down in price at all, and even though we could afford the mortgage payments on that house, it wouldn't have been comfortable. So we're going to look at some houses in Rochester tomorrow. We would have gone today, but I am having my scrapbooking party at 11:30 so that wouldn't really work out. But as of right now we're meeting to see three of them, and one of them is the one we're most excited about seeing. So we'll see what happens! Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Anyway, I guess that's about it from here... My job is still going well - I'm working on some pretty hard cases right now, which is kind of frustrating, but I was able to get rid of the one that was weighing on me the most, which is huge. But there isn't much other news. Hopefully I'll be able to do a better update this week!

One Week

I can't believe there is only one week left until Christmas! Holy cow! I'm excited. For a while, I was starting to feel like I had lost my Christmas spirit, but it is starting to catch up with me again. Yesterday, John and I had to go to Vermont for a family party with my dad's side of the family. It was nice to see everyone. We did a Yankee Swap, and I was #1, so that was great! If you're #1 in a Yankee Swap, you get to go around and look at all of the gifts after they've been unwrapped and pick whichever one you want, since you didn't have the chance to swap with anyone after opening a gift! That started to make it feel like Christmas again.
There is also only one week left for me at my job at Seacoast Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. That is going to be bitter sweet when I leave. My last day is Friday. On one hand, I'm really excited about not having to deal with a lot of the stuff (and one of the people) there, but I am going to kind of miss it. I've been there for about a year and 3 months, and with the turnover rate in the medical records department, that's a long time! On the up side though, I'll be starting a new adventure in substitute teaching. I'm trying to decide if working in a school is my calling, so what better way to find out?! I still have no job with the state and they've got 44 days left to find me one. I'm not getting my hopes up.
I heard back from UNH about why my diploma hadn't arrived yet. Well, apparently, one was ordered in my married name instead of in my maiden name. So they were going to have the printer make up a new one for me. I am glad I caught them ahead of time, because I had actually wanted one with my married name on it, for the sake of ease, and I told them not to have the printer make a new one, that I WANTED the one they had, and so to just send it to me! I'll be relieved to get it. I'm excited to have it and be officially done with that chapter of my life.
I guess that's about all for now. Life is pretty boring, but I'll be sure to keep everyone updated when I start subbing!

Life As We Know It

Okay, so I realized this morning that my graduation date from UNH was 14 weeks ago. I still haven't recieved my diploma, and I'm a little irritated about this. It's not like I NEED to have it, but it would be nice being officially done with them for now, and knowing that I actually have a degree. It's making me a little nervous that maybe something happened and I'm one credit away from actually having my degree. That would SUCK! Anyway, if any of you had this issue when you finished up at UNH, please let me know so I can know to not be that worried.
Next, I decided this weekend to quit my job. It's just time for me to move on. I'm going to give my notice tomorrow and my last day will be 12/23. That way, I can fully enjoy my Christmas, and then take some time to really enjoy my Christmas and New Years. Then, I'm going to start substitute teaching and if that doesn't work out, find a job somewhere else. The state has only 51 days left to get me a job (but who's counting, right?), so I'm not going to hold my breath much longer.
There really isn't much more for me to update, other than those two things... At least, I can't think of anything at the moment. I'm trying to figure out why all of a sudden I can't put images into my livejournal, so forgive me if all of a sudden my posts look weird. I guess that's it for now.

Life as a married college graduate

Well, first off, the wedding went so smoothly! I couldn't believe we didn't have a single problem the whole day! Everything went fine, everyone showed up when they were suposed to, we ended up with really good food at the reception, and we got rave reviews about our DJ! All of the pictures are up on http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/mcardin81/my_photos and just follow the one that says wedding. As soon as we get some back from the photograper and can get them scanned in, I'll upload some of the great professional ones too.
Our honeymoon was fantastic also! We drove to Searsport, ME, and stayed for two nights, then on to Port Elgin, New Brunswick for two nights, then on to Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. While in Searsport, we ventured up to Bar Harbor, took a trolley tour of Acadia, which was really nice, and got a lot of great pictures. We did a small amount of shopping while we were there, too. Neither of us had ever been to Bar Harbor, so it was nice to visit. The next day we drove up to New Brunswick to stay in this REALLY nice place in Port Elgin, which is about 1/2 an hour north of Moncton, and maybe 45 minutes from Fundy National Park. This inn was AMAZING. They had the best food and the suite we stayed in was so nice! There are some pictures of it in the Honeymoon part one photo album at the same website. While we were in NB, we went to Magnetic Hill, which is a hill that you drive down, get into the left lane, put the car in reverse and then get "pulled" back up the hill! Want to know how it works? You won't hear it from me! =) It is an optical illusion though, but still cool none the less. Then we went to Fundy National Park for the afternoon, which was also great. The weather was nice while we were there, for the most part (we got some rain just as we were getting ready to head back out of the park), and we did a lot of hiking around in the woods. We went to see a waterfall and got some nice views while we were there. The park is about 80 miles, give or take, so there was a TON we didn't get to see, which was kind of sad. It would be very easy to spend a couple of days or a week exploring it. John and I both got tee-shirts at the visitors center, so that was a fun way to commemorate our trip there.
After Fundy, we went to see the Hopewell Rocks, which are these rocks that, when the tide is out, you can go explore the caves and crevices of them, but when the tide comes in, look out! It rises about 20-30 feet, and you can go kayaking around the rocks instead! There are some great pictures of them on in our photos. We made it back to the inn an hour late for dinner, but the innkeepers were great about it.
The last phase of our trip included Prince Edward Island. So, when we left Port Elgin, we stopped at Cape Jourimain, which had a lighthouse we could hike out too, plus some really nice pictures of the Confederation bridge, which is the 8 mile bridge that crosses into P.E.I. We hiked around there for a bit, then hopped back in the car and crossed over the bridge into P.E.I. Our first stop there was at Gateway Village, which has a tourist center for people coming into P.E.I., plus lots of little shops. We picked up some brochures, then drove around that part of the island to Charlottetown. After lunch and exploring Charlottetown for a bit, we headed up to the place we stayed in Cavendish. That place was really nice too. The suite we had was great and had this HUGE whirlpool tub in it. We went out to dinner in New Glasgow that night, to a really fancy restaurant. I tried muscles for the first time, and John had salmon that was cooked on a piece of cedar wood. The dinner was good. The next day we saw the Green Gables house, from the Anne of Green Gables books (NOT the one from the movie - not to be confused, this was not that house) and hiked through the "haunted" forest. That was cool. Then we moved on to Avonlea. This was the town from the Anne of Green Gables books and they have people that dress up like all of the characters and play the roles of them there. Every 15 minutes or so they do another skit somewhere around the town, so that was kind of neat. Next we went to the Cavendish Boardwalk. There are a bunch of little shops there, and John got a "Red Dirt Shirt" there, and I got a PEI Dirt Visor. They're dyed with the red dirt and mud in PEI. Then it was lunch time for us, and then we headed to the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum. There was some really cool stuff there! After that, we drove to Kensington to go to Woodleigh Replicas, a place that has all scale replicas of medieval castles and chapels and houses and such. Some were large enough to go into, some were only like up to our waists, but they were all really cool. After that we went back to Cavendish and went to the beach. We have some beautiful pictures of Cavendish beach up on the photo site, so check those out. All of the dirt, more or less, is red, so a lot of the beach is red. The sand was brown, like normal beach sand, but the beach itself was just gorgeous. After that, it was dinner at Rachel's Restaurante, and then we went out to the Boardwalk again so I could get a visor for my sister and some chocolates for my parents.
When we went home the next day, we made a couple of stops so that the drive didn't feel as long. We went to the reversing falls in St. John New Brunswick, then we stopped in St. Andrews for lunch, then it was on to Bangor, ME to get gas, then on to Dover to swing by John's parents house to pick up our wedding gifts, and finally home by 10:30 that night. It was such a great trip though, we got to see and do so much by driving! I'm so glad we did it that way. Maybe next year we'll take the Scotia Prince up to Nova Scotia to get to see that part of the Maritime Provinces.
So this week I've just been dealing with name change stuff and let me tell you: that has been the biggest hassle! Since I wanted my name to be Melissa Streeter Cardin, I figured I would just go to the social security office to change it. Well, apparently I can't just change my middle name, I have to go to probate court to do that. Not to mention, we (me and the woman that works at social security) discovered that social security and the IRS had my date of birth as September 19 instead of August 19, so that alone has caused enough problems. So for two days I was walking around with a legal name of Melissa Marion Cardin, and since my date of birth was wrong, they have to verify from the state (even though I had my birth certificate there) that I was really born Aug. 19. So it's going to take like a month to get the new card. So today I went to probate court and had my name legally changed from Melissa Marion Cardin to Melissa Streeter Cardin, and then I went back to the social security office, and waited two hours to have it changed again. Then she told me that they would put it in the computer, but since they still had to wait for D.O.B. verification, I probably won't get my new card for like a month. SOOOOO if I get hired on by the state, I'm going to have to bring like... my old SS card, my form from them stating my name was change to Melissa M. Cardin, my marriage certificate, and the court order that my name was changed to Melissa S. Cardin. But most of the major stuff is done anyway... not much more I can change. I just need to mail the stuff to the bank for my car loan and UNH and my student loan company. Then when I register my car, I'll have to take care of the name change there.
So, that's how I've been spending my time as a college graduate... still looking for my DCYF job, but I called the Rochester office and they said there should be two openings waived next week. That means that everyone HAS to start praying really hard about that =)
Okay, I'm going to wrap this up, my fingers are sore, and I've been working on this entry for about 40 minutes now. I'll catch up with everyone in due time! Oh, and in case you didn't know - mcardin81 on AIM!

All at once

Holy cow! So yesterday John and I had our new little kitten arrive at our apartment. Molly is her name and she's adorable! Anyone who wants to see pictures, just drop me an e-mail (mcardin@comcast.net) and let me know, and I'll send you the link to them online. She is such a riot, but she doesn't do very well sleeping at night... we're still working on that one. It is very fun having her around though.
Today we went to Kerry's for her graduation party. It was fun, and it was great to see a bunch of friends from UNH that I never get to spend enough time with! I love having that quality time with them to really relax and have fun. I don't think I have a greater social circle than the people I got to hang out with today, and I mean that! So all of you that are reading this that I saw today, remember that I love you all to bits and I miss each of you terribly! (Well, I don't miss John, as I see him every day - and that's NOT a bad thing at all!!!)
Tomorrow I work a full day at SOSMed, then Tuesday I have my LAST COLLEGE SEMINAR EVER!!!!! As of 11:01am on Tuesday, I can put the letters BASW after my name! That is so exciting! Then on Tuesday afternoon, I'm working from 12:00-4:30 at SOSMed. Wednesday I have to put in my last 8 hours at my internship by going to a training. Fortunately, that doesn't require me driving very far, just to the other side of Concord. Since Friday was my last day in the office in Rochester, the coworkers there threw me a little party. It was a lot of fun! They bought a cake and some ice cream and it was great! I almost started to cry when I was getting ready to leave the office. Hopefully the week after our honeymoon I'll be able to go back for a job interview, as there are 2 positions opening up there. We'll see... :-/
And finally, last but certainly not least, the WEDDING IS LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY!!!!!!!!!!! Holy cow, I can't believe it! I am SOOOOO excited and so happy!
I can't believe how everything is coming at once though. But you know, at least it's all good things that have been happening to make this month feel even better!
So, since I probably won't post again until after the honeymoon, I'll catch y'all on the flip side!

The beginning of an end

It really is, isn't it? Between finishing college and ending my life as a single person? In a couple of weeks though, it will be changing to the end of a beginning... Strange how that works...
In two seminars (just under two weeks) I'll be able to put the letters BASW after my name. That's so exciting! I can't wait for that, to finally be done with my bachelors degree. Albeit a couple years later than I had originally intended, but better late than never, right? I'm really excited about being done with school, but I'm still really nervous about finding a job... I really am nervous about where I'm going to work because I can't seem to find an open position in an office that is even remotely close to where I live now!
In just over two weeks, I'll be able to put a new last name before the BASW, which I'm INCREDIBLY excited about! The planning is pretty much done, and that's a relief. I'm mostly just nervous about everything coming together alright. But surprisingly, I'm not at all nervous about marrying John. In fact, I've never been so sure about anything in my life! He has been such a positive influence on my life and I am eternally grateful to God for letting us find each other... Just for everyone's reference, my name will be Melissa Cardin after July 30th, and my e-mail address as of right now is mcardin@alumni.unh.edu
Time to feed Chuck (my guinea pig) and change into my PJ's... night all!

Holy Cow

Okay, it's been well over a month since my last update. My apologies to those who look forward to their monthly dose of my ramblings. Things have been so busy lately, and are just now starting to wind down. I'm actually taking a break from a take home final I've been working on this afternoon. It's the only final I have this semester! WOO-HOO!!!! Can I just tell you how happy that makes me?
Overall, things have been going well. I'm not doing poorly in school, even though I thought at times this semester I was going to fail for certain. Plans for the wedding are coming along very smoothly, which makes me happy. I'm trying not to stress about that though. I just keep telling myself that if something doesn't go right, the only people that will know will be the members of the wedding party and my and Johns families. That thought has been keeping me sane for a lot of it.
Tomorrow I have an interview at the Rochester District Office for the possibility of getting a job there. It's not a formal interview, but it's just a chance for me to talk to the people there, say "this is what I'm interested in" and for them to say "this is what you'd be doing" and things like that. Then I have another interview in Concord on Friday. That one is going to be very fast though, because it's going to be during the lunch break of a training I'll be at that day. I'm a little nervous, but I think they'll go fine. I hope they will anyway. I need to make sure I print off copies of my rƩsumƩ by tomorrow though.
I can't believe mothers day is this weekend already! I am going to mail my mom a card, because I can't get home this weekend to see her, but fortunately, since my Aunt Donna is coming home that weekend, we're going to get together and do something with my grandmother that day, since Mothers day is Sunday, my dads birthday is next Tuesday, and my grandmothers birthday is the Tuesday after that, we're just going to have a big party or something that day. I have to figure out what John and I are going to do as far as going home that weekend-it was another poor planning for me weekend. I'm going to be in Concord, then I'd have to go back to Dover, then back through Concord to get home that night. I guess I'll have to, since I think we're going to have to go home Friday night. My sister is going to the prom that night, so I may call Chris and Theresa and see if they want to get together with John and I.
Anywho - I need to get back to work on this final now, I suppose. Less than one week of classes left!!!

All Kinds of Stuff

Wow, I'm so behind in this thing! Oh well. I've been super busy with school and everything lately that I really haven't had time to update my journal.
School is going well, for the most part. Despite my several near-breakdowns, I've been handling things pretty well. I just finished up my first paper, and I still have two more to write. If I can make it through April 16th, I'll be all set. The rest of this semester will be pretty much all downhill from there. Classes are going pretty well, and I still (kind of) like my internship. It can be stressful, or there are days that I don't have anything to do. Since I can't carry my own case load, I pretty much just do whatever other people have me do. Monday, though, I'm interviewing Detective Harrington from the Dover P.D. to see how they work in conjunction with DCYF. Then I'm spending the rest of the afternoon working on paper #2. I'm feeling much more optimistic than I was a week to a week and a half ago. Maybe some of that has to do with the fact that I just took brownies out of the oven, and some of it has to do with the fact that it is beautiful outside, but either way, I'm still feeling good.
Wedding plans are going smoothly too. We've gotten all of the big stuff situated, so now the rest is just details. That makes me happy! John and the guys still need to get their tuxes though, but I think that's the last major thing for anyone. After that it will just be picking flowers, table arrangements, and so on.
Anyway, I guess I really only have one last thing to say - CONGRATULATIONS KERRY AND DAVE!!!! I'm so happy for you guys!
Alright, I need to get going. I have a ton of work to get done between now and 3pm. Catch you all later!

Ready to graduate

Oh my goodness, things are so busy!!! My semester is going pretty well, but I'm just so tired of having to be on the go all the time. It seems like no matter where I am, I'm getting ready to go somewhere else. I'm also tired of being broke! My classes are more or less interesting, which is nice. I'm taking SW 623 (Practice II), SW 551 (Human Development II), SW 640 and 640 A (Internship and Seminar). My days look kind of like this: Monday - Work 8-5, class from 6-9. Tuesday - Work from 8-10, Class from 11-12:30, Work from 1-5. Wednesdays - Seminar from 8:40-either 10 or 11 depending on if I have supervision that week, internship from 12-4:30. Thursday - Work from 8-10, class from 11-12:30, internship from 1-4:30, RCIA from 7-9. Friday - intern all day. By the time I get home at night, I'm exhausted. But, it makes the weekends that much nicer when they come. But when I say that I'm ready to graduate, I mean that it'll be great to be able to come home from work, not have to do homework, and be involved in other things without feeling like I should be somewhere else.
There are definitely some good things going on though. I still get to see John on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, which is REALLY nice. Monday and Tuesday days make me so ready for Tuesday nights by the time I get there! I will become officially Catholic in just over a month, which is really exciting. It doesn't seem like it would be that big a deal to most people, but this is a very big thing for me, and I'm very excited about it! Also, spring break is also just over a month away, which will be a much needed spring break. I was going to take the week off from work, but I think instead I'm going to just take off Wednesday all together so I can schedule a doctors appointment and a dentist appointment and an appointment to have a dress altered for my friend Theresas wedding.
ALSO, the wedding plans (speaking of weddings) are going really well! I picked up my dress on Saturday :-D and I didn't want to take it off when I tried it on that night! I'm going crazy not being able to show John, but it will be so much fun that day! I feel like a princess with it on!
Okay, I need to go shower so I can start the day. At least I'm feeling pretty good today, which makes a huge difference!
People start dropping me e-mails! I miss everyone!

Back to school

I can't believe classes start up again tomorrow... oh well - it's the last spring semester for me! The countdown is... 7 weeks to spring break, 17 school weeks until commencement, and 27 school weeks total until I'm done with my bachelors!!!!!!!! I'm sure everyone I know that's graduated already knows exactly how I feel right now - anxious, excited, and stuck with the biggest case of senioritis E-V-E-R!!!!
It's strange to think, too, that I will be getting married in 28 weeks! It really doesn't seem all that long when I look at it that way... but it's true - 194 days!!! I'm soooooo excited! I cannot wait to be married!!! I went dress shopping this weekend and got my dress. It had to be ordered and it will be arriving in about 6 weeks. 2 of my bridesmaids and my maid of honor and my mom were all there, so we were able to pick out the bridesmaid dresses too! That was nice. Then today, John and I went shopping and got our toasting flutes and cake knife and stuff. I got my garter yesterday too. It's been pretty stressful, but now we've got the church, the reception site, the dress, and the bridesmaid dresses. We're working on a DJ and a photographer now, and we've got to get our engagement in the papers, but after that, it's all just details, so that's good.
I should probably finish unpacking from the weekend too, I've got stuff all over my bed. I was hoping to get in some yoga tonight, but I don't think I'm going to, so maybe in the morning.

Stuff

Things have been going pretty well lately! I've been working a lot, which has been good. I started trainings for DCYF last Wednesday. I have another one coming up this Wednesday. I'm not overly excited, but I have to do 8 of them while I'm an intern, so I'm glad to get a jump on them.
This weekend was pretty good. Saturday was nice and relaxing, John and I spend a good chunk of the day just kicking around the apartment in our pajamas, and making pancakes for breakfast. We spent the rest of the afternoon at his house, and then at 4, we went to mass, because we knew we wouldn't make it to mass on Sunday.
After that, we had dinner at his house, then came back here and did various things, and watched Back To The Future on tv.
Sunday we had to get up early, because my parents, my sister and my cousin Bonnie were all coming at 9 am to go meet with a reception site at 10. We went and looked at Cottage By The Bay, and I think that's going to work out, if we can get to have a little bit of flexibility with the menu for the buffet. We're waiting to hear back from our contact person for there. I really like that facility, so I REALLY hope it works out. At 11, we headed over to Durham to go to the bridal show at the New England Center. That went well - we had some definite ideas come from there. We talked to a DJ and stuff, and they seemed pretty good. After that, we went out to lunch at La Festa in Dover. Then we took everyone to see the church John and I are getting married in. They thought it was really nice, so we were happy to hear that. Tonight, we're meeting with Father Cole to get started on paperwork and everything. Anyway, after seeing St. Josephs, we went to Great Bay Gallery & Catering to meet with them about a reception. They were pretty good, and it was good to know that I wouldn't mind using them if the other place falls through, but I didn't really like them as much. They're catering menu looked pretty good, so Mom wants us to see about trying to get something similar at the Cottage.
We've also changed the day from August 20th to July 30th, so as of today, it's 201 days!!!
Anyway, I've got to get ready for work. Ugh. Can it be Friday again yet?

Yay end of the semester

I love the end of the semester! Especially when, after tonight, I only have 2 classes left (that's right, I said 2 - know why? Because I don't have to go to TWO of my classes tomorrow!! yaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!) and one of them is an in class final (in a philosophy class - whoo hoo) and the other is essentially a breakfast class, in that we get to drink coffee and eat breakfast and talk about what we liked about the semester. I have 3 out of 4 term papers done, handing in #3 tonight. #4 is due next Monday. I have 2 take home finals, one I already have, the other gets posted on blackboard tomorrow!
Tomorrow will be a good day. 2 classes, then I'm going to go donate blood, then I'm going to work on my paper, then head up to Laconia around 2 or 2:30 for Johns school concert. I'm excited about it, he's worked so hard with those kids this semester.

Oh, so this past weekend was an adventure. I got home from work on Friday and John came up, like normal. We spent the night cleaning and getting ready for both of our parents to come to my apartment for pizza on Saturday. So I was dusting around the living room window, and I put my foot up on Henry's desk to reach behind the hutch that was on it, and CRASH!!! The top of his desk broke! Fortunately, nothing else did, but I felt soooo bad! I cut my leg in 2 places, and my other ankle and hurt it a lot. But his computer was fine and none of his stuff broke, so I gave him my desk, and John gave me one that he had at his house. What a mess! But it's all good now. Henry wasn't mad, surprisingly.
Saturday John and I went up to Sarah and Chad's for their engagement party. We only stayed for a couple hours, but it was good to see her that day, since it had been a while since I'd seen her. That night his and my parents came over for pizza, and got to meet each other for the first time. That went really well! Our parents were like long lost best friends or something. So that was good. Then Johns parents and the two of us went to the Strafford Wind Symphony concert up in Rochester, and it was excellent. John's probably going to start playing with them in January, which will be good... I'm kind of sad, because we'll lose another night together during the week, but I'm excited for him to have a chance to really play with a group again.
Sunday was just a Sunday... worked on homework and that was about it.

Anyway, off to my last SW 705 class! YAY!!!

Stuff

Well, only a few more weeks until Christmas, which means there is only a week left of classes. YAY!!!! I handed in my first 2 term papers this week, and I have two left to write. One is due on the 9th, so I need to really start working on that. The last one is due on the 13th, so I need to start working on it, but not as much. Neither of them really have a page minimum either, so thats going to make it much easier. I'll be SOOOO glad when this semester is over! It's been bordering on nightmarish! Next semester won't be as bad, just internship 2 days a week, work 17 hours or so, plus my seminar, practice 2 and human development 2.

Thanksgiving was good - it was nice to get home for a weekend. John came with me, and that was really nice. I'm glad we didn't have to spend a holiday apart. I'm glad we won't have to spend Christmas apart either! It will be strange not waking up at home on Christmas morning, that's never happened before, but I'm excited about being with his family for the holiday. I love his family, so it will be fun.

This weekend John and I are going up to Sarah Casses for her engagement party, which should be a good time! I haven't seen her house yet, and I haven't seen her in a long time!
Also, we're going to the Strafford Wind Symphony concert with my parents and Kate and his parents! They're meeting for the first time, and I'm kinda nervous! More so because tonight John and I have to clean my apartment since they're all having dinner here!!! So it's massive cleaning night tonight... ugh.

Anyway, I'm just home for my lunch break now, so I've gotta wrap up and head back to work... only 4 hours left there until the weekend!

Peace!

Detroit!

November 4, 2004
Yesterday I arrived in Detroit. It was a long travel day, and I was beat when we got here, but the flights were good, and not too long, which was nice. Amanda and her boyfriend picked me up at my apartment around 6:30am, and we headed to Manchester Airport. Our flight left on time and we got to Chicago at about 12:45, Eastern time (11:45 there). Then we took off about 2 hours later, and the flight from Chicago to Detroit is only about 35 minutes long, which was VERY nice. Then we had to take a terminal to terminal shuttle to our shuttle that would take us to our hotel. We’re staying in the Marriott Renaissance Center. The whole conference is here, and this hotel is HUGE. Like… HUGE. There is a food court, a shopping mall… the lobby is on the 3rd floor of the building! There are 70 floors! Our room is on the 37th, and we’ve got a pretty decent view from here. It’s neat. Last night there was the Opening Plenary Session, with Maryann Mahaffey, ACSW (none of that probably means much to anyone else, but she has had an AMAZING life). She has done all sorts of advocate work, received many academic and achievement awards, oh, it was amazing to hear her speak. She was so funny, too, because she kept getting off on tangents. It was great.
I called my parents and John when I got here, it was good to finally get to talk to them and let them know I made it safe and sound. I was feeling a little homesick last night, but I'm doing much better today. I knew I would when I got going with stuff. Now I’m just looking forward to going to bed! *laughs*

Today I went to the BPD Student Mini Conference, which was really interesting. Our first session went from 8-9am, and it was a round table discussion about what student social work organizations are doing for activities and recruitment ideas. I got some really great ideas about what to do with our organization. Then at 9:15-10:15 we did a session on where the jobs are for BSW students. That was really cool to hear, even though I already am pretty sure I know what I want to do. However, the biggest thing they were talking about is how important it is to get licensed, which is fine, but then they’re like “you HAVE to have an MSW to do anything” and that got me worried. But we’ll see. I’m going to look up requirements for things that I’m interested in when I get back home and have internet access (since it costs $9.95 a DAY here at the hotel). Then they talked about some of the fields of Social Work practice, being: aging, alcohol/substance abuse, child welfare, community/neighborhood work, corrections/criminal justice, disabilities (physical/mental), income maintenance, medical/healthcare, mental health, planning (macro level), statistics/analysis… There are a lot more too, I have them all listed in a hand out I got, along with current (as of 2001) pay rates for social workers.
The next session went from 10:30-12:00. That was on the present social policies. It was interesting, in that there were so many points of view on the panel. The best quote from that panel came from Thelma Gould from Asbury College: “We have to work within the system while we work to change the system.” She talked about the move towards privatization (in prisons, healthcare, etc.) and the emphasis on compassionate conservatism and faith based services. Deneece Ferrales from Our Lady of the Lake talked about TANF policies and policies surrounding Gays and Lesbians. She gave a hand out about TANF, which I’m going to read over again tonight. Sudershan Pasupulti talke about children in foster care, and put together a great handout about some of the negative effects of foster care and parental neglect of children. Gerald Mathews talked about … well… basically his political views on everything. I have to admit, I agreed with a lot of the things he said, but some of the things he said just made my blood boil, such as how if you didn’t support a woman’s right to choose, maybe you shouldn’t be a social worker (me being pro-life). I don’t remember everything he talked about, but he had a couple of handouts about the differences between Bush and Kerry, and basically how mad he was about the outcome of the election.
From 12:15-1:15 we had a luncheon session on Social Work in the Future. That was interesting, because they talked about the use of bilingual social workers, and also about the greater need for technology in our line of work. They talked about how great immersion programs could be in becoming somewhat fluent in another language, and starting to understand other cultures, especially where Caucasians are not ever forced to become “bicultural” like Black Americans, Hispanics and Asian Americans.
From 2:45 – 4:15 we had a panel talk about the disabled, what their needs are and what social workers are doing for them. It was ironic, actually, because one of the Dr. Rebecca Bolinger, the first speaker, is in a wheelchair and she couldn’t access the platform, there were only stairs to get up to it! To sum up what she said, she said that we need to know resources for the disabled, just like for any other part of our practice. Dr. Bonnie Zetick from LaSalle University discussed cognitive disabilities. She explained that the strengths perspective was developed because of cognitive disabilities. She also mentioned Howard Gardner’s multiple learning styles. Dr. Janice Wells from Winthrop University talked about social work students who themselves have a disability of some sort and what sort of resources we should access. The ADA states that an “Individual must have a physical or mental disability that substantially limits major life activies.” She said that students must have proper documentation, but that students are often afraid to seek resources (fear of it being on their record, fear of discrimination, they may not see themselves as having a disability, they don’t see the benefits, and they don’t want to be patronized). Dr. Ike Adams from Asbury College gave a great case study about a woman named Linda, who was of Korean decent (parents immigrated to the US), she was totally blind and had a guide dog named Nacho. It was an amazing case, to say the least.
The last session of the day was on Spirituality and the Code of Ethics. Dr. Bruce Schleider (Union College) basically said that religion is “the horse that gets us to the water,” and that spirituality is our connection with God, as we understand Him. In social work, the code of ethics is the horse. He said that the main principles of the code of ethics are: service, social justice, dignity and worth, importance of human relations, integrity, competence, self determination and responsibility to clients, colleges, agency, profession and society. Deb Daehn Zellmer recommended the book Spirituality Diversity in Social Work. I don’t think I’m going to get it, but it could be interesting. She talked about a study she did that was done with masters level students all over the age of 26, and she found that they were more likely to agree with the statement “I am a spiritual person” than “I am a religious person” and more likely to examine ones on spirituality than be religious when working with others. Sandra Doe said that we have to allow spirituality to become a part of the helping process.
Tonight I bought a book at the exhibitors tables called Days in the Lives of Social Workers, which is one that I’d been wanting to get since January, so that’s cool….
Now I’m just gonna do some homework and crash. Night.

November 6, 2004
Yesterday, the conference went well. I sat in on a session from 8-9 am about learning rural behavior through music. It was an interesting idea, in that if you really take time to listen to the lyrics of songs, that one can learn a lot about what is considered “the norm” in rural communities. I didn’t see how it related to today’s rural communities though, because the songs we were listening to were dated back (at most) 150 years or so. After that, I did my volunteer time, steering people from BrulĆ© A and B to either Nicolet B or DaVinci. For 2 hours. Fortunately, my time doing that was not all bad, because, despite the sign posted in front of BrulĆ©, people were still going in! Go figure. So I was able to steer them in the right direction. And for that, I got a certificate of appreciation! I should frame it. It says my name, the dates and “Baccalaureate Program Directors” on it, so it looks impressive.  After that, I took a little bit of time to vege, then I found Martha, and we grabbed lunch. It was nice to have time to sit and chat with her. We talked about things we had learned at the conference, and we also talked about our program, and how I was doing in it and some of my personal beliefs on things. It was a good lunch with her. After that, I sat in on a session about a study done on corporal punishment, which was really interesting. Nothing found was too much of a shock, but one of the things I did find interesting was she had the definitions of what was considered mild corporal punishment ranging to severe physical abuse. After that session, I skipped out on the next one, because I was tired, so I just wandered around the building and started getting my stuff together for the trip home today. Then I changed before the last session I went to for the day, and that was on an organization called Active Minds. This organization is currently on 14 college campuses, and they work to promote the awareness of mental disorders, and advocate for those who have them. It was a very interesting program to hear about, and if I weren’t graduating at the end of the year, it would have been something I would have pursued getting at UNH. After the last session, Amanda and I went up to the room, did a little more packing, I called Dave T. and John, and then she and I headed out for our “big night out on the town” (a.k.a. going to Hard Rock CafĆ© Detroit). We had a good time, the food was excellent (as always), but unfortunately, it didn’t work out to get together with Dave. That was a bummer, but at least he’ll be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. I am hopefully going to get to see him one of those times, because it’s been quite a while since I saw him. Anyway, Amanda and I took the people mover to the restaurant. The people mover is basically and elevated train, like they have in Chicago (you know, you seem them on E.R. all the time!). Then we walked back from the restaurant to the hotel, and pretty much vegged for the rest of the night. I was passed out by a little after 10, which was good, because we were getting up early today to meet Martha for breakfast at the River CafĆ©.
It was nice of Martha to suggest that, she even paid for us to have breakfast, which was awesome. The food was excellent, so I was very grateful. It was the healthiest meal I’d eaten this entire trip, another reason to be grateful! After that, Martha took off for a session, and Amanda and I wandered around Detroit for a while. We walked up to Greektown, took a few more pictures, and then headed off to the hotel again, because I wanted to go to an 11am session on marketing the program, since Martha wanted to go to a different one. That was an interesting session, I got some really good ideas to pass on to her, so I can wait to sit down with her and have a little one on one chat with her about it.
Now I’m on the plane from Chicago to Manchester, and I can’t wait to get home. We left the hotel at noon, got to the hotel at around 12:30, and our flight didn’t take off until 3:10. That was not fun. So I wandered around the terminal for a little while, called John and my parents to tell them I was at the airport, then snacked on some peanut butter crackers and Snapple. The flight was fine, just about an hour long into Chicago. Then we had an hour and a half wait at Midway, so I called my mom and John again to tell them I was in Chicago, then just started working on my book report that I have due on Wednesday on Turning Stones, and got to talking to the people that were waiting to get on the same flight who were originally from Finland! Now they live just north of Bath, ME.
So far, the flight home has been uneventful. I need to get back to work on my book report before my battery runs too low, so I’m gonna get back to that now. Peace!

New Job - Day 1

Well, I'm not going to say I have the best job ever, but I do really like it. It's paying me really well, and the people are all really helpful and friendly. There was one girl there that I wasn't sure I was going to get along with, but we ended up being cool by the end of the day.
So I'm working in medical records at Seacoast Orthopedics and Sports Medicine (yes, for you UNH freaks out there, the same office that handles the UNH sports teams). It's a lot of filing, which is fine with me, because I like that stuff, and I'm good at it. The only thing about it that I don't like is that it's a lot of up and down and crawling on the floor and stuff, so I came home and my feet didn't hurt at all, but my back is KILLING me. The shelves of records are over 6 feet high, and go all the way to the floor, so it makes for a lot of physical stress as far as that is concerned. But I think it's going to be good. It's nice, because it's one of those jobs where the only people I deal with are the people I work with, and I can leave it all at work when I leave - I don't have to think about it at all once I'm gone, so it's a nice feeling.

As far as everything else goes, things are going well. John and I went to Six Flags on Saturday to celebrate our 6 month anniversary, so that was a TON of fun. We had a great time - well, I know I sure had a great time, and I'm guessing that John had as good a time as I did :-) We went on a bunch of the roller coasters, so that was fun, and I went on that ride, Scream, the one that's the huge tower in the middle of the park. It was soooooo scary, but a lot of fun :-).

Now I'm just getting ready to put away some laundry, and then get ready for bed. My 8 am class was canceled, but I'm going to go over to campus early so I can work on a project either in the mub or at the library. Then I have class, class, study session, class, then over to Johns house :-D

I guess that's all for tonight!
Peace!

HOORAY!!!

So after a very long and somewhat bizarre week, here's what I have to report on: MONDAY - John had the day off due to the holiday, so we spend most of the day chillin' at his house. I did a LOT of homework that day. But that was good, because it got me all prepped for the week. I didn't have to do much of anything for this week after the weekend I put myself through. TUESDAY - Wake up early to find an e-mail from someone wanting me to come in for a job interview at Seacoast Orthopedic & Sports Medicine, to work in their medical records department, e-mailed back to say I could come in on Thursday. Class (really bad presentation on the legalization of drugs), class (fight with the professor about my schedule, got a homework assignment that was due Thursday), class (got back a test that I got around an 80-85 on, when all's said and done - which it's not yet), lunch (yay break!, class (get back a test that I got an A- on... Every once in a while, I kick some serious ass!), come home and grab the mail and see that my present for John for our 6 month anniversary arrived, and also our tickets to 6 Flags that my parents sent us arrived. Then I went over to Johns for the night, laptop in hand, and played around online at his house for a while while finishing a paper. Then we watched some of the Sox/Yankees game (a real disappointment...), I came home, did some stuff around my room, watched the rest of the game and called it a night. WEDNESDAY - Got up at 6:50 to get ready for my new job. Sounds great right? Well, after commuting 35 minutes and 19.4 miles to get there, I found out that they didn't even have enough work for me to stay my whole shift and that she didn't even know if I would have to come in on Friday or next week. Some new job! I was pissed when I left. Good thing I had a job interview on Thursday. Class (handed in 2 papers, chatted a lot, that's about it - I like my child welfare class), dinner/reading in the MUB (You know, the book Turning Stones by Marc Parent will blow you away - READ IT!), seminar for my VI-E grant (sat and listened to people gripe about their internships). I stopped at Johns house on my way home, that was nice, because I didn't think I would get to see him. Came home and watched the Sox/Yankees game... it's getting old guys. THURSDAY - Class (class for Tuesday got canceled so my presentation got pushed back to Thursday!!! YIPPEE!!!), class (nothing exciting - I still wish they hired someone different for this job), class (exam on Tuesday got moved to a take-home that we're getting on Thursday! YIPPEE!!!), SOSW meeting (stuff happened, then we left), trek to the holistic health fair (free reiki session - that is so great!, free spine screening - no wonder I need to crack my back all the time...), Class (okay, I arrived SLIGHTLY late because of my free reiki session, but who cares - it was so great! Other than that, nothing eventful.). Then headed back to Seacoast Orthopedic & Sports Medicine for my interview, at which I was hired and offered hours from 8-5 on Mondays and Fridays with an hour lunch, and hours on Wednesday from 8-2 or 2:30. YAAAAAY!!!! Things are FINALLY starting to come into place.
So my new job (the one I'm quitting) e-mailed tonight and said they definitely don't need me tomorrow, so I'm going to do all the junkloads of homework that I was going to do on Sunday and then I won't have to think about it! Then Saturday comes and (should the weather hold out) it's 6 FLAGS DAY!!! I can't wait! It'll be so much fun, seeing as how the last time I went was in the summer of 2001.
RCIA is going well, and I like it a lot. I got a new Bible tonight. Deacon Bob made a really neat note of what the Bible is on the blackboard in the room:
Basic
Instruction
Before
Leaving
Earth
I think that's kind of neat.
Okay, that's all the news from this end of town. Bedtime for this kid! Happy trails all!

So Lethargic

So today is a day that I have the whole day off... no work, no class (and I can say no work because I got hired at a new job on Wednesday!!!!!!!) and all I should be doing is homework. So I'm trying to write a reaction paper about a 10 minute video clip that I saw in my SW 622 class yesterday, and it's like my head is in a fog. My paper is coming out so bad! So it's a good thing is a rough draft that I can e-mail the professor and get back and re-write before it's due. Have you ever had to do that? Write a 2-4 page reaction paper to a 10 minute movie? I mean come on! I didn't get enough out of that movie to write a 1 page reaction paper, let alone 2-4 pages.
So anyway, there's that being worked on right now... The other stuff I have to do today? Read the rest of a chapter in one book, read a chapter in 2 other books, read 2 articles and write another reaction paper. And that's just the stuff I told myself I had to be done with today! That's not including the 2 chapters I blocked out to read on Sunday or the 5 page report on Monday or the 2 chapters I have to read Monday or the NY Times reaction paper I have to write at some point too... Thank God that's the easy one!
Anyway, other than being busy with homework this weekend, things are good. John has a 3 day weekend, which is nice, so I'll get to see him on Monday too. That makes me happy :-D Umm... Oh! Hopefully he and I are going to Six Flags New England next Saturday, but I don't know if that is going to happen, since the tickets my mom had my dad mail haven't made it to me yet... My poor mom is convinced they got lost in the mail. She told me to call my dad and find out when and from where he mailed them, but he's not home. Go figure.
RCIA is going well. I'm still really enjoying the classes, and it's nice because I'm thinking about a lot of things that I either don't give enough time to or hadn't even thought of before. Last night I was handed a picture of a police officer in mourning at a memorial somewhere, and I was told to find God in that picture. Not exactly something I do every day, but it was surprising how fast I was able to find Him when I really thought about it.
Anyway, if I really want to get any of this work done, I need to stop updating my journal and get back to work.
Peace!
